What's Next? Step 2 to Reflecting, Redefining and Refocussing on Your Goals.
Last week I shared the first step to reclaiming and redefining your goals (If you missed it read it here). I talked about the importance of shifting our mindset away from limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs such as "I will have no time, or I can't achieve that because…" I shared how I took a big step and enrolled in a Masters Degree program when I was six months pregnant with my second daughter. I knew "time" would be a huge factor, but it was something I had to do for myself, and I knew I just had to start. The second step I want to share is seeking clarity.
Clarity is a Two-Way Street
Clarity is everything! Becoming clear about the life you envision for yourself and your family is a massive step to establishing long-term goals. I like to think there are two components to this. One is the act of decluttering your space. Walk around your house/apartment and area at work. Make a list of all the things that need to be done that you have been putting off. Decide to get them done. Go through your closets, find clothing, shoes, accessories that you have been hoarding that are of no real value to you anymore- get rid of them. Papers/ junk mail that has been lying around that you keep putting off. Set a date to do some shredding and filing away. During the summer months, I usually declutter all closets, paper, cupboards, etc. the house feels lighter, making me feel lighter and focusing and having clearer thoughts. You may be wondering what any of this has to do with you achieving your goals. Truth be told when your space is free of "Undone" and clutters, you make room in your mind for new ideas and relaxation that will motivate you to achieve your goals.
The second component is decluttering your mind. We consume so much information daily and process so much information daily from the news, various ways we entertain ourselves, social media, etc. Unfortunately, some of that information tends to be negative. There are many ways to declutter your mind as a way to get clear about what you want out of life. Here's a list of practices you can adopt to help you get clear:
Get Quiet; I recently created a prayer corner in my home office space. My prayer corner is where I go when I want to embrace the quiet moments, pray, visualize, and meditate.
Journal, I do this once a week, which allows me to focus on my thoughts and write them out.
Brain Dump frequently, I keep an idea notebook book which helps me to "brain dump." Whenever I feel overwhelmed and cluttered in my thoughts. I write all down all opinions, frustrations, things to do, random thoughts, and ideas flowing in my head.
Define your life's Purpose/ Mission. Why are you here? What will be your contribution? What will you be remembered for? Have you ever asked yourself these questions? Being able to answer these questions allows you to align your goals then accordingly. Your mission statement is your WHY, the greater part of yourself. Your personal mission statement will guide you as you reflect, redefine, and refocus on your goals. A good mission statement would include; what, why, and how. What are your skills, how will you use them, and why (keep reading, I included mine below for you to use as a guide). Anyone can have a personal mission statement, and if you're anything like me, you can have multiple statements.
I recently learned what it means to be a "multipotentialite." This article here describes it best. As a multi-passionate person, I don't consider myself to have just one mission in life. So I crafted three personal mission statements. When I get distracted by the news, negative thoughts, or lose sight of what I'm supposed to be doing. I can always refer back to these statements:
1. In the context of teaching:
My purpose is to use my pedagogical skills to teach young individuals about the world of business while inspiring and empowering them to spark their entrepreneurial mindset to create their own business opportunities.
2. In the context of being a speaker :
My purpose is to use my motivational skills and to empower women to craft their best lives and reach their full potential.
3. In the context of a mom blogger:
My purpose is to use my experiences as a mom to encourage other moms to pursue their own goals while raising healthy, passionate, and happy kids.
This post is already longer than I intended it to be. So, I'll stop here. This week, however, I'd like you to seek some clarity; If you're already practicing some of these things, that's wonderful! Please comment below and share some other things you do to get clear. Also, work on defining your life's purpose and the deeper meaning of "YOU."
I love you for reading, come back next week to see what step 3 is all about.
