Just Take the First Step! Reflecting, Redefining and Reclaiming Your Goals
“ You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great” Les Brown. Think back on a time when you had a huge goal; you didn’t have it all figured out, you didn’t have the money set aside, you probably also thought you didn’t have the time. You may have felt victim to paralysis analysis for a while, but you got up despite the feeling of overwhelm and decided to go for it. To Just get started. Unfortunately, too many of us remain stuck and never get started. After shifting their mindset, getting clear on what they want, and finally setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, some people never actually take steps towards achieving those goals. This inactivity is influenced a lot of times by fear. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, even fear of success. But energy and ideas flow where attention goes. Even in times of doubt, I guarantee you just need to take the first step. This will give you the momentum you need to keep moving forward. You will be surprised how ideas and people will start showing up to help get you closer to completing that goal.
I use the process of childbirth and raising kids as a metaphor when I’m faced with challenges. Going through this thought process always somehow snaps me out of my head and reminds me of the power that resonates within me. Think back to the fear you felt when you thought of bringing home your little bundle of joy that depended on you for literally everything. As a first time mom, you probably read all the books, sat in on all the classes, and maybe had some experience babysitting a toddler back in your teen years. The truth is, no amount of courses or books can prepare you for those first two weeks with a newborn. Yet, you did it anyway! And I bet you are an amazing mom. Use that same energy and commitment to ditch fear and take the first step towards your goal.
Make a list of the things you need to do to get you closer to your end result. Commit to doing one thing each day or five things each month for those bigger goals. In 6 months, you will be amazed at the progress you made. As always, I love you for reading, and I'm rooting for you.
